"Notice: Although you can find everything you need to get up and running in the FAQ by Wacko, I still thought it would be a good thing to write this up, as more of a guide for new users to get started. I am in no way a master of L2, nor am I a part of the L2J development team, but I have successfully set up the client, and server and feel qualified enough to inform those who haven't.

I. What is L2J?
L2J is a Lineage 2 Server Emulator.
II. Do I have to pay?
L2J is 100% free.
III. What do I need?
Before you get anything, install Java, from Java.com. The button should look like this:
Client: If you want to simply connect to someone else's server, you'll need the Korean L2 Client, fully updated, and the L2J Tools.
Server: If you're wanting to run a server for yourself, or for others, you'll need the Korean L2 Client, fully updated, the L2J Tools, and the L2J Server.
IV. Installation
Client: Install Lineage 2, and let it do a full update on your client. Once it's fully updated, extract the "updateIni.bat" from the l2j-tools.zip and run it. It will ask for two things:
1. Your Lineage 2 directory. Example: C:Program FilesLineage II
2. A server IP. There is a list of servers available at this forum, and a server status page here(LINK DO TEJ STRONY PODANY JEST NA DOLE). (Thanks to Hellcaster for the php. Thanks to Subimpact for hosting it.)
Server: Install Lineage 2, and let it do a full update on your client. Once it's fully updated, extract your l2j-tools.zip and l2j-server.zip to a new directory. I placed them in a folder named "L2J Server" on my desktop. Open the folder, and run the "convertData.bat" which will ask you for your Lineage 2 directory (Example above). Once this is done you need to open your "server.cfg" and change the value of "ExternalHostname" to your IP. If you are playing alone, with no internet connection, use 127.0.0.1.
If you are behind a router, you have two choices:
1. Use your LAN IP, and play by yourself, or with others on your LAN.
2. Use your WAN IP, and let others connect to your server from the internet.
If you don't know what your WAN IP is, check whatismyip.com. People who are behind routers and would like others from the internet to join their games, will need to also open ports 2106 and *7777. Once all this is done, you're ready to run the "startServer.bat" which is the actual server application.
* - This number is defined in your server.cfg, but is 7777 by default.
V. Getting Connected
Assuming you've done everything correctly (whether you'll be playing on your own server, or someone else's) all you should have to do is start up your Lineage 2 client, and login to the server. You don't need to register anywhere at this point, just type in a name and password, and your account will be created automatically.
If you've made it this far CONGRATULATIONS, You've successfully setup L2J.
VI. Are there castles, dragons and quests?
Not at this point. The developers are working hard to get the most basic things working in L2J. Development on castles, dragons, and quests will come later.
VII. Are there working NPC's?
Most of the NPC's you find in the game will have nothing to say to you. But there should be (depending on your server version) a few NPC's in town that will sell items to you, but that is it. No quests, no chit chat.
VIII. When will L2J be finished?
L2J will be finished when it's finished. So please don't start a thread, asking the developers to finish the emulator. They are working on this with no pay, so it can be free for you. The least you can do is be patient and supportive.
IX. Can I change my server name?
Your server is named Bartz. You can't change it. (Yet.)

Please feel free to correct me, if I have made any mistakes. Suggestions and ideas are also welcome.
Special Thanks: I would like to give a big thanks to Wacko, who wrote up the original F.A.Q. because without his help, I would not know any of this."
