Final Fantasy XI: Expansion Speculation
Last week, it was reported than Square Enix registered the name "The Chains of Promathia" with the US Trademark Office, fuelling rumours that a second expansion pack to its immensely popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XI was about to be released ("Rise of the Zilart" being the first).
For those not in the know, Promathia is a deity who plays a very important role in Final Fantasy XI's history. He created the Beastmen for the people of Vana'Diel, the creation of goddess Altena, to conflict with.
Now, Quiter have uncovered details of forthcoming upgrades to Final Fantasy XI, most of which will probably come from this expansion pack. They are:
An entriely new location known as Limbo. This place is described as a "reverse world", with many fearsome enemies which only Alliances of 18 players stand any chance against. Getting out isn't just a matter of running to the nearest escape point either - players must use a Gate Crystal Teleport spell or be killed to return to the normal world.
Player vs. Player. Unlike other online RPGs, this isn't a standard player killing system where someone you don't know slaughters you and runs away with your goods. A player has to meet a certain requirement to initiate PvP in the first place, they cannot fight unwilling participants and some jobs will be restricted to balance out the odds.
Huge Burning Circle Nortorious Monsters (HBCNM). These are an expansion of the normal BCNM fights, except Alliances of 3 parties can fight instead of just the one party.
New jobs seem unlikely, but there will be new missions and weapon skills, available from a new array of weaponery. Also likely will be an increase in level cap from 75 to 80.
Regarding a release date of the expansion, it hasn't even been confirmed officially yet, so don't hold your breath. Rest assured it'll be out before the European release though.
