Lot's of 7's and 8's is about what I expected. I'm incredibly excited to play the game tomorrow and SF has always been about local versus play more than anything else so the lack of features at launch doesn't bug me BUT it's 100% fair to judge the game available tomorrow for what's on the disc, even if it's only staying that way for about 2 weeks.
What is on there ? - 16 playable characters , each with a basic 4 stage story mode showing their individual motivations and goals. A survival ladder that lets you play through a handful of opponents depending on difficulty and a very basic tutorial.
Beyond that the game is all about multiplayer but even there , it's missing some forthcoming features. You can only do 1V1 Ranked/unranked/lobby. So you can play against your friends online but only 1 at a time.
As well, since the store also isn't out for 2 weeks, you can't spend any of your fight money nor unlock much beyond colors for your characters basic outfit.
So - you ask , why is this game out already if it's closer to a final beta test than a finished game ? Because the game plays amazingly solid , it's also a 60 dollar ticket to buy into a 60 month service (that's only a dollar a month !) and Capcom has to get it's pro tour rolling this month so the game needs to be out to ensure players have access to a home version to train.
Like any "service game" launch , the first few weeks will be rocky as features are implemented and any remaining critical errors both online and offline are fixed.
Basically - if you were on the fence buying SFV , I suggest just waiting until March 1st - you will get a full challenge mode that shows you combos for the entire cast, the store will be open so you can spend your fight money and Alex will be available.
If you ONLY care about offline play , I suggest waiting until June - 3 extra characters, full blown MK9/MKX style story mode and the main game should be cleaned up as good as it's probably going to get this year.
For the rest of us , the ones that have friends to play with IRL or those of us that intend to be online warriors - well let's be honest - you've probably already pre-ordered but being real here - the 16 characters offered all have something unique and the core systems in SFV work very well so sitting and just playing the game is fun stuff. That's the most important thing and capcom has nailed it.
Rating for someone buying on a whim that expects an MKX level experience - 7.5/10
Rating for someone who pre-ordered and play the beta already - 9.5/10
Rating a year from now - 9/10 for everyone.
I know capcom has said they won't be doing "super" updates but , I feel like at retail, they need to release a 60$ disc just before season 2 starts that has the entire base game on disc as well as all of season 1's characters (hell maybe throw in the extra costumes as well). This won't be called "super" but that's pretty much what it will be and for those that really don't care about playing this game right away - waiting for that will give you the SF4 equivalent launch experience you feel you deserve.
