Cytuj:
I like to kill little animated people.
Do you know what I like more than killing little cartoon men?
RIPPING THEIR BODIES IN HALF AND WEARING THEM AS A SUIT!!!!!
Finally a game has come along that matches my need for clothing made of people, and this game's got more than that baby.
To start, this game has one of the best opening cinematics (and in-game cutscenes) that I've seen recently.
Their mix of real imagery with CGI is brilliant. The voice acting isn't 100%, but it's still pretty good.
In prototype you're playing as lead killing machine Alex Mercer, you wake up in a morgue and freak the hell out of the two dudes who were about to take a photo tour of your innards.
Now going in, I was thinking it was some sort of 'superhero' game like that infamous game for the PS3 that just came out.
I was wrong.
This is a story about the ZOMBIE freaking APOCALYPSE people!
As you're progressing through the game and bouncing around NYC you notice that in some parts of town traffic flows normally, the NPCs run around the streets doing their normal thing.
But then you notice off down an alley way.... hey there's some chick getting ripped to pieces by 3 dudes!
Eventually, the infection really starts to spread around the city and people die en mass.
It's like being there when the zombie apolcalypse starts, at first everything's cool and then it's just brutal chaos with dead bodies in the streets, burned out cars strewn all about.
There are side missions like other open world games, but they're not too overdone.
Most missions are related to either consuming an NPC to gain access to an unaccessible area, destroying/sabotaging stuff in the environment, killing certain characters, driving things + blow stuff up at the same time... same ol sandbox fare
Upgradeability is a big thing in this game. Every point of XP (EP in this game) you earn is tradeable for skill increases.
You have offensive powers like (wolverines) Claws, strong arms, tentacles. There's powerups for health, mobility (jumping/running) and others too, so there's a lot of levelling up to do.
Even while not upgraded, Alex Mercer is a versatile fellow, he can run up/across buildings, do the jumping bounce like the Hulk, glide like a flying squirrel and sprint.
When I first played it yesterday I couldn't help draw similarities to so many games/movies I'd seen in the past and I liked it, but there's really no point in saying it's like something mashed with something, because these folks have taken inspiration from so many sources, the jumping of the hulk, climbing buildings like spidey, claws like wolvie, slowed down bullet time that happens more than you realize during some particularly brutal combat.
There are bad points, but not many...
1. NO Multiplayer.
2. While the overall graphics are pretty good, I don't like the minimap that much and often times while trying to navigate the city I'd turn myself the completely wrong direction and spend 5+ minutes going the wrong damn way across town.
Thankfully, if you travel long enough in one direction, eventually something will try to kill you and give you a diversion from running around.
Hey devs it's 2009, just give me a GPS or at least an arrow to point me to my next waypoint!
3. Destroying buildings is RARE:
I've been playing Red Faction: Guerrilla since last weekend, I wish prototype had more things to destroy in the City.
Some buildings can get brought down, but not all. With the massive power of Mercer, you should be able to throw an army truck right through the billboards in times' square.
4. Not many choices when it comes to stealing vehicles:
I wish you could jack more vehicles. You can take what you're 'trained' to drive by certain people you consume along the way.
There's a mission where you have to eat some lucky army bloke who happens to drive armoured vehicles, so you get to drive a tank.
I got in that tank and spent the next hour destroying over 1000 NPCs (I know this because you're given you an updated stats report every few minutes with your kill count, etc;)
During that hour in the tank, I got a few cheevos for raping the populace as a killing machine driving a killing machine.
But what I realized during my time spent frolicking down the boulevards watching bodies fly....
I can't fucking drive a car/bus/anything not military in this game! GAH, sandbox games should have lots of grand theft auto :-P
Anyway, awhile back the CEO of Activision said that they're only pushing games these days that have the potential of over time becoming $100 million plus franchises... This is it baby!
If this game gets to come back for a number 2, I could see it being almost damn perfect with the addition of environmental destruction and more vehicle theivery.
So in short, this is a sandbox game where you play an (almost) unstoppable killing machine (with the powers of superheros gone before) surrounded by a city being ravaged by a resident evil-like virus that's turning the population of New York into zombies. It's failings are few, and will be forgotten by the time you start to get some new powerups and abilities to make those zombie/corporate bastards pay!
Oxys score: 4/5 (if they polish it a bit, protoype 2 has the potential for a 5!)
Definitely worth a DL!
